COMSATS University Islamabad, Sahiwal Campus is going to be the first educational
institution of the Sahiwal division to be fully converted to solar energy. Green
Pakistan Vision can be brought to fruition by taking advantage of environment friendly
energy sources.
Access to environment friendly and low-cost energy is now a necessity in almost
every country in the world. This was stated by Rector COMSATS University Islamabad
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tabassum Afzal while signing a Memorandum of Understanding for
installation of solar plant at Sahiwal Campus.
Director COMSATS University Islamabad, Sahiwal Campus Prof. Dr. Saleem Farooq Shaukat
and others were also present on the occasion.
On this occasion, Rector COMSATS said that comprehensive measures are needed to
promote a culture of solarization for alternative energy. He said that the savings
generated by shifting educational institutions to solar energy would be spent on
educational activities. He further said that a solar plant has already been installed
in the Islamabad Campus of the university and now the process is being shifted to
other campuses as well.
Director Sahiwal Campus Prof. Dr. Saleem Farooq Shaukat said that a 300 KW solar
power plant will be installed at Sahiwal Campus after which CUI will become the
first educational institution of Sahiwal Division to be fully converted to alternative
energy. He said that under the MoU, the project would cost around Rs. 97 million.
This agreement has been signed with DCH Solargiga Pvt. Ltd. under which the said
company will install the solar power plant in 6 months while the entire responsibility
of operation and maintenance of the plant will also be managed by the company for
the period of 20 years.
A total of Rs 1.29 billion will be saved in electricity during 20 years. In addition,
the plant will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5,266 tones over 20 years.
