Program Overview
Food Science and Nutrition is a rapidly growing discipline, drawing knowledge
from a range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, food engineering and even
business. Availability of food, especially nutritive food is a big problem for the
developing countries. According to a report, 40% of the population in Pakistan is
living below the poverty line and 44% of children under the age of 5 are stunted
and unlikely to reach their full mental and physical potential in Pakistan. Consequently,
food and its nutrition are essential for a healthy life and to get rid of some common
foodborne diseases like hepatitis, typhoid, influenza and heart diseases. The combination
of nutrition and food sciences provides a much better understanding of the processes
behind food production and how this can be modified to produce healthier foods.
In BS Food Science and Nutrition the students will learn about food chemistry
and quality, food preservation methods, nutrients in food, nutritional values of
fruits and vegetables, sources of proteins, food manufacturing business and many
more related areas. This program aims to fulfil the idea of Therapeutics through
Nutritional Control.
